1. Learn from experience. Next time you might hit a stud and break your phalanges.
2. Just taping and mudding it will NOT work, and it will take a TON of mud. Follow this procedure.
a. Cut out the "floppy" piece inside the hole, you can let it drop inside the wall.
b. Get a small flat stick, at least 2" wide but only 1/4" thick or so. In a pinch, a piece of sheetrock about 2" wide will do. Make sure it's length is LARGER than the hole.
c. position the stick or sheetrock on the inside of the hole. Secure it in place with a single sheetrock screw on either side of the hole. So now you have a hole with the stick recessed inside it for support.
d. Cut a piece of sheetrock approximately the size of the hole, and use a third screw right in the center to attach it to your brace.
e. NOW take the sheetrock tape, cover the entire hole, mud over it, feather the edges.
f. Let the mud dry really well before smoothing it and painting, you many need to put a second coat of mud over it to make it flawless.
Source(s): Not only have I hung sheetrock for a living, I have had to make these repairs many times in my life as a younger, more reactive man. I've also broken phalanges. Being married to a professional is not the same as being one. - SandraLv 51 decade ago
Got to Home Depot or the like and get some Mesh Patch and 5 minute mud (for sheet rock/drywall). Get a putty knife, add water, mix....coat, let dry, coat again...etc. Coat about 3 times. Rub it down w/a wet rag to smooth it out. Dry completely before painting (shouldn't take too long).
