A boxer, with a 5kg fist, punches a heavy bag (mass 25kg) with velocity 25m/s. If the punch contacts the bag for 0.3s, calculate the acceleration of the heavy bag.

    This is an impulse question:

    F = dp/dt

    I assume that the entire momentum is transferred to the bag so:

    F = p / .3s

    where p = mv = 5kg * 25m/s

    F = 125 / .3 = 125 * 10 / 3 = 1250 / 3 = 416.666 N

    then F = ma

    a = F / m = (1250/3) / 25 = 5 * 10 / 3 = 50/3 = 16.6666 m/s/s
