Since it's a classic BMW, the factors that are important in figuring out the price are a bit different compared to normal cars. For example, what's the condition of the interior and what parts, if any, are original and what parts are aftermarket/redone. Is the paint original? Is the paint scheme a desirable one for that year? Is there any rusting and if there is, where and how bad? The first thing you need is more specific detail of the condition and some photos if possible. "Better than fair" doesn't seem adequate. After that, I can recommend two methods to approach this:
1- Look at similar cars that recently sold on ebay. Check the completed auctions and see how much they sold for.
2- Post the description and pictures on a BMW forum and ask members for estimates. www.bimmerforums.com has an active classic BMW section.
The 1600 engine is VERY simple to repair and maintain so as long as the body is rust free (specially the door sills, under the floor mats and the wheel archs) and the interior is in good shape, you can expect to pay around $8,000-10,000 and above.

It really varies from buyer to buyer. An average guy off the street probably wouldn't want to pay much for a 40 year old small BMW, regardless of how many miles it had. But even the 2k2's from the mid 70's fetch a pretty penny, so probably $15k + if you can find the right buyer.
I'd say that it may very well have 82k original miles. no way to tell unless he has service records, though.

$7-15,000
82,000 can't be real. The odometer has probably rolled over more than once as they only went to 99,999 miles back then.

82000!!!
my car is over a year old and i've covered more miles than that.
you sure that genuine mileage. it could have just run round the clock a couple of times and ended up at 82000. i remember my dads old car used to show just up to 100000 miles before it resets to 000000. could have done it a couple of time round
