How do I lighten my highlighted/colored hair?

Hi there! I last had my hair colored professionally in January (6 months ago). I had it colored very close to my natural shade (dark brown) and had some blonde/caramel highlights put in. I now have 2+ inches of roots. I'd like to lighten all of my hair so I could color it a lighter red brown shade, but I know that even though my hair is colored the same color as my roots, it won't lift evenly. What is the best way to get a uniform lighter shade on my half-colored hair?

PS - I'm not too worried about covering the highlights - if the show up, fine, but I'm assuming they'll start to blend in once my hair is lightened.

Update:

If I use a "color corrector" or "color stripper" should I apply it only to the colored portion? If I apply it root to tip, will it lift even the undyed portion as well? I'm trying to avoid having stark white roots and light brown hair - I'd like to try to make it uniform root to tip before coloring...

If your gonna go the Red route I would definitely go with a reddish brown color if you would like to cover the highlights. Maybe a Chestnut is a lighter brown red but will stay and will cover over your highlights and lighten as well

Yea but not a really light blonde it will look strange. Try to keep to a neutral close to a light brown with blonde in it. I have seen a lot of people with dark hair that put highlights in that are too blonde and ruin their hair. Dont do it untill your 100% sure you feel ok with it. Speak to your hairdresser too maybe? :) but I think yea with a mousey kinda blonde :D hope it turnd out good!

always go to the salon !! but if you are gonna do it yourself Sally's has a hair color that is made to lighten dark hair ! the problem is your hair will for sure be lighter at the roots from where you don't have any other hair color .... if you really really wanna chance it walmart sells hair color similar to the one at sally to lighten dark hair ... but when you use a box color you never know what is gonna happen ....

I think u should avoid using chemicals on ur hair .. hair dye is a hair killer... keep it naural and see what happens

Having a professional either strip or bleach it. I'd suggest stripping, and not in that sense.
