what is this black material under the hood?
well, i was working on my saab 9-5 cleaning it up and all, and i noticed this big black material under the hood, im wondering what it is, do i need it, and can i take it off and put it back on if needed?

It's a noise insulation blanket. It also helps to keep the engine warm for longer between journeys: the colder an engine is, the longer it takes to warm up to working temperature and it uses more fuel whilst doing so.
You can take it off if you want, but they can be tricky to replace on some models.

Seen lots of cars with this sort of thing. Not sure what it is, but my guess is soundproofing, waterproofing, vibration damper etc...
Not much point in taking it off, it's there for a reason.

its is used for 2 main reasons, one is sound dampening and the other is incase of an engine fire it will fall off and smother the fire, in theory of course. i took mine off with no problems
