There are many, many websites and books available with patterns you could choose from. One of my favorites is www.quilterscache.com where you can browse through patterns by name, size or picture. The patterns are also graded by "pins" as far as difficulty. One pin is an easy beginner's pattern and 3 pins is advanced.

For helpful advice, tips and chatter, visit the quilting forum on www.about.com. We have lots of ladies and gentlemen willing to share opinions, advice & more as well as lots of tutorials, eye candy and swaps. A great place to chat with other quilters from around the globe.

Good luck on your quilt - I'm sure whatever pattern you end up with, I'm sure the recipient will treasure it!!!

Not sure what you mean by "stitch in" a pattern on a quilt "design" (are you doing *embroidery* on your quilt blocks or on a whole-cloth quilt, or are you referring to *quilting* a pattern in the blocks, etc.?), but a theme that could carry her from childhood all the way to adulthood would be flowers, or other "natural" things (pretty ones, if she's into that).
