You can download mp3s from emusic.com and rhapsody.com as well. iTunes does not sell mp3s, they sell their songs in a proprietary format called AAC. It is now unprotected and therefore playable on more devices than just the iPods, but not nearly as compatible as mp3 files, or even wma files.
