Problems and misfortunes are a part of life. Everyone experiences unhappiness, and many people may become depressed temporarily when things don't go as they would like. Experiences of failure commonly result in temporary feelings of worthlessness and self-blame, while personal losses cause feelings of sadness, disappointment and emptiness. Such feelings are normal, and they usually pass after a short time. This is not the case with depressive illness.

Depression becomes an illness, or clinical depression, when the feelings are severe, last for several weeks, and begin to interfere with our work and social life. Depressive illness can change the way a person thinks and behaves, and how our body functions.

The depressed feelings we all experience after a serious loss or disappointment may last for a short or a long time. How long depends on the person, the severity of the loss, and the support available to help the person to cope with it.

Clinical depression may also last for short or long periods. It rarely becomes permanent. Without professional treatment, it may end naturally after several weeks or months. With treatment, it may end much more quickly.

Find out about local self-help groups and attend a meeting with them. Try to be patient and non-judgemental. Most of all, don't do it alone - get other people to provide help and support you.

I am battling with clinical depression for the last 15 years. I Haven’t found a cure yet.Treating depression early may prevent years of suffering. Since the social consequences of depression are also risk factors for depression, treating depression early can prevent a vicious cycle of depression – isolation- depression. However, it is never too late to get help.

    Take CARE as always

Therapy and medication! I've had Major Depressive Disorder for years, and still go through times where I seriously just don't want to live anymore. The main thing that gets me through it is the knowledge that it's a temporary and my emotions will likely be different tomorrow. Just making an appointment to see my therapist or psychiatrist helps me feel better sometimes because it gives me hope. And if the meds aren't working, tell the doc because they have experience with figuring out what works for you. Once you're on this path, you will actually FEEL like exercising again, which makes you feel even better. I know that in my case, it's a part of my daily life and will never go away. There are times when it's less obvious, or I feel pretty good, but I don't let that fool me into thinking it's okay to stop taking the meds, because they are what keeps me out of the abyss. As a temporary fix: stay AWAY from alcohol (it's a depressant!) and turn to coffee to help you feel like getting even a little exercise. Remember to eat first though -- believe me, it does help, along with therapy and proper medication.

Yes, many of us have been able to overcome this. An important ingredient in the recovery process is to develop a personal interiority. Most people do this by reading. An excellent book to start with is: I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. Work on developing a personal philisophy, and it will help you. Helping other people to make their lives better will also help you to make yours better. A well-balanced nutritional program including minerals, trace elements, vitamins, anti-oxidants, and multiple kinds of fiber and protein, is the foundation for building a healthy mind and body. I have found a family of nutritional products that I know gives me the best chance for longevity and health. Email me if you would like particulars. Living a long and healthy life.
