has anyone successfully lowered their cholesterol levels by diet ?

mine has come back slightly high and my doctor says i should be able to lower it by "tweaking" my diet which is usually pretty good. i have 3 months to lower it before she will give me tablets so the challenge is on. someone told me its not possible. if u did how did u do it? i have started noting the fat content and have been good so far....day 4 and counting!

thanks for yr help

I have. A no or very-low cholesterol diet is key, so try to eliminate most or all animal foods such as meats, fish, dairy, eggs (skim milk and egg whites ok). Oat bran cereal, oatmeal are very good. Go easy on fats, esp. saturated and trans fats, even the healthy fats, they also contain some cholesterol. Exercise is probably the most effective method for lowering cholesterol, but even better when combined with vegan/vegetarian diet.

Of course its possible!!! My dad and grandmother have both lowered theirs by:

    1. Drinking a little red wine each day

    2. Eating oatmeal for breakfast (oats lower cholesterol)

    3. Cutting out, or at least reducing cheese and olives

    4. Using the margarine spread that lowers cholesterol instead of butter or ordinary margarine

    5. Leaving out egg yolks in cooking. Replace 1 egg in recipes with 2 egg whites. If you eat boiled or scrambled eggs or omelettes, etc only have 1 egg yolk per day.

    Hi,

Why would you be tracking the fat content?

Fat and cholesterol are two completely seperate chemical compounds!?!

    Nor would i track cholesterol..

Come to think of it. Elevated cholesterol is not due to too much dietary cholesterol, but a symptom of something else.

I'd cut back on processed foods. Eat mostly raw foods and meat. That is, meat, fish, fruit, leafy greens, veiges, berries, nuts and seeds.

    Thats what will do it.

I haven't personally but I know it is certainly possible. You just have to avoid foods high in cholesterol. It won't be easy and it certainly won't happen overnight. It will probly take weeks to months but it's certainly possible.
