Is My CD Burning Drive Broken?

My CD-R/RW drive can no longer write files to any CD. However, it can still read and erase them.

No matter if I use a brand new, used, blank, or partially full disc; it gives me a message "There was an error in the writing process. The disc you are using may no longer be usable".

I have checked everything-my device manager, drivers; etc. and everything is fine.

If this helps; I'm running Windows XP. My PC and drive is 6 years old. I've burned many CD's. So is my drive worn out; or is there a fix I am missing?

Thanks to anybody who can help.

A cd writer uses a laser to burn to the CD. This requires a certain amount of power (brightness), reading a CD does not need as much. CD burners do weaken with age so yes it is very possible it will read but not burn. You can try running a cleaning CD to see if that will help (won't hurt) but usually replacing it is the only option.
