Male dogs do all mark their spot?

In some manner all dogs mark. This is why they smell the ground before peeing. I have heard that if you neuter a male dog the chances of him marking territory is slim. I have owned many male dogs but none of them were neutered so i guess i can not say weather or not this is true? There have been a few people that have told me their neutered males don't mark.
