My doctor told me to lose weight and my hernia will go away. It is above my belly button. Is he correct?

I am overweight and my doctor said all I have to do is lose weight and the hernia will go away on its own. I am a 31 year old male and am 50 lbs. overweight. Should I get a second opinion? The "hernia" is not painful or interfering with my life in any way, it is just noticeable to me when I slide my hand down my abdomen while standing. When I lie on my back, it goes away completely. Should I be concerned that this may be a cancerous tumor or just fat protruding? I have lost 15 lbs. recently so please don't think I am trying to find an excuse not to lose weight. That is NOT what I'm asking here. I am just concerned... my body continues to tell me that something isn't right. But I am unemployed and don't have insurance (broke) and can't afford to see a doctor.

A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity. There is no way your doctor can mistake a cancerous tumor of the size you're implying in an area free of dense tissue for an abdominal hernia.

Hernias by themselves may produce no symptoms, but nearly all have a potential risk of having their blood supply cut off. If the blood supply is cut off at the hernia opening in the abdominal wall (strangulated hernia), it becomes a medical and surgical emergency.

Since your hernia is noticeable only while standing, you most likely have a reducible hernia (as opposed to irreducible or strangulated).

From your description, it sounds like the type of hernia you have is an epigastric hernia. These usually occur above the navel. Epigastric hernias are composed usually of fatty tissue and rarely contain intestine. These hernias are often painless.

In general, all hernias should be repaired to avoid the risk of emergency surgery should your hernia become irreducible or strangulated. All hernias have the potential to become serious.

The treatment of every hernia is individualized, and if your doctor recommended nonsurgical management, you should be happy.

Some doctors feel that hernias with large openings have a very low risk of strangulation. This may be why your doctor has recommended weight loss for you, but if you gain weight again, the hernia will return because you still have the opening. Large openings can be complicated to close, and any hernia surgery weakens the abdominal wall, allowing the possibility of recurrence (which means more surgery).

Obesity increases the pressure of the abdominal cavity and may contribute to the formation or worsening of a hernia.

To lower the risk of a hernia becoming irreducible or strangulated, the sooner a reducible hernia is repaired the better, so even if you get a second opinion, you should continue with the weight-loss regimen.

Avoid activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure (lifting, coughing, or straining) that may cause the hernia to increase in size.

If the hernia suddenly becomes painful, tender, and irreducible, you should go to the emergency department immediately. Strangulation of the intestine within the hernia sac can lead to gangrenous (dead) bowel in as little as six hours. Not all irreducible hernias are strangulated, but they need to be evaluated.

Edit: Can you explain how you got to see a doctor about this when you're unemployed, don't have insurance, and can't afford to see a doctor? I'm in a similar situation with another problem.

Your boyfriend has a hernia; the name for this type of hernia is Umbilical Hernia. It is not due to his weight gain; but due to the fact that the ring surrounding the "belly-button" has enlarged and is now big enough to allow a part of the bowel to enter into it. It is due to weakness of the tissues surrounding the belly-button. It should be an easy operation to take care of this problem. It could be done in a Surgical Center and he would be released the same day.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

You can start losing weight steadily and quickly by cutting your calorie intake down by around 350-500 a day and drink plenty of water, eat healthily. Also breaking down your meals into multiple snacks can help speed up the metabolism meaning you will burn calories quicker and digest food quicker. By cutting down portions and being healthy you could loose a couple of pounds within a fortnight. Which isn't amazing but you are more likely to keep it off and get used to eating less meaning you can carry on your weight loss to further lengths.

while that is partially right, it depends on how far along the hernia is. get a second opinion and loose weight (just go outside for a while and walk .. drink plenty of liquids).

I lost 10 pounds doing that and feel a lot better.

Having seen this I feel the need to share something because I spent years going from diet to diet without experiencing any real results until I saw Pams magic plan (just google it). Without doubt its the best results that I have ever had and it is still working to this day.

I loved to play ball, and for the first time in my life, I'm actually useful, at a ballgame, instead of just a big stationary person, that maybe if the ball comes within this range, I might get it. I was wearing-I'd always wore XX kind of jersey. And then I went down to medium. And then the medium was too big, that it's coming down here.

So I'm wearing a rockin' outfit, and I'm making a play, and the guy stops, beans it in the face 'cause he says, "Look at your body. You're rockin' hard." And that was the first time I had ever gotten a compliment like that in my whole life.

Label each with time along with calorie amounts to avoid eating everything at one time.
