What can you use on your dog to prevent black flies from biting him?
I have a yellow lab and we have so many black flies in northern maine that the dog within a few minutes of being outside is covered with black flies. He itches so bad because of the bites and I am afraid he will get infections from all the scratching. What could I use that is safe and works. Frontline Plus does not work for black flies.

Skin So Soft won't even faze them!
We got hit hard with them in Ohio a couple of years ago. AUGHHH!
The only thing I've found that really helps is Flys Off spray. I started spraying myself with it to do my yard work!
I think a fly spray formulated for horses would work, too.

Therapuetic grade Tea Tree oil ( melalucca) you can get it a GNC, Put it on with a cotton ball. You can also mix it with bottled water in a spray bottle and mist them to repel flies. Another good recipe is Avon skin so soft (1cup) White Vinegar (2 cups) Brewed Chamomile Tea (1 cup) Melalucca (1 tsp) Mix in a Quart spray bottle and spay on your pets or even your self if you are going to be outside with flies, mosquitoes, fleas, etc! be sure and shake the sprayer before using.

Find a feed store or somewhere that sells horse supplies and buy fly spray. Double check the label, but the majority of horse fly sprays are approved for dogs as well, and they are designed to repel all biting flies.

I've had bad luck with Frontline too...we use Advantix...it seems to do the trick for us when we go visit our family up north. Also, I'd try using lemongrass oil..yes you can buy it, fairly cheap, and it's the same as Citronella only natural. I buy oils like that all the time for my soap hobby and a great place is www.thesage.com. Anyhow, good luck!
PS Any chance of keeping the dog inside as much as possible? I know that sucks, as my dogs prefer it outside, but if nothing else works, limiting their exposure would help.
And, I agree with the previous post about the fly repellant used on horses...my parents use a wipe or spray on them and it works wonders..should work for doggy too.

Those are nasty buggers! I double up protection naturally by using an all natural supplement that works to repel fleas, ticks, mosquitos and all manner of flying insects. The supplement I use is Earth Animal Internal Powder and you can check it out here:

And for extra protection, especially during the initial 3 weeks of using the Internal Powder, you can check into this wonderful spray (so natural and safe you can use it on yourself and the kids):

Good luck.

Call your local vet and ask. It must be a common problem in your area so your vet will know what is safest and best to use.
