Does anybody know this quote about education?

I'm trying to remember a quote but I can't find it. It goes something along the line of "When you know it all you've earned a bachelor's degree. When you realize you've just begun you've earned a Master's degree ..." then I forget the rest.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Update:

Thanks for your help anyway. Yeah, Twain was a genius. Since I have had children my parents have gotten much smarter.

My take is the quote puts down 21 year-old-know-it-alls who have a BA.

    I've found two versions of what I believe you're looking for, except that I can't seem to find the original authors of either one of them. Here they are, in any case:

    "When you think you know everything, you are eligible for a Bachelor's degree;

    When you think there is a lot more to learn, you are eligible for a Masters degree;

    When you think you know nothing, you are eligible for a PhD."

    "When you get a BS you think you know everything.

    When you get your MS you realize you know nothing.

    When you get your PhD you still realize you know nothing, but it is ok because now you know no one else does either."

    No, sorry. I like it so much I even googled it but I can't find it. And I know a lot of quotes.

    Funny, though, I have observed that many new teachers I work with do have this attitude that now that they have a degree they know it all. If you find this quote, please post it. I would love to see someone else confirm what I have observed.

    It reminds me of the one by Mark Twain (maybe it's not by Twain),

    "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

    - attributed by Reader's Digest, Sept. 1937. This quote has been attributed to Mark Twain, but until the attribution can be verified, the quote should not be regarded as authentic.

    Sorry, I can't find the quote from Twain, but the nearest to it I can find is this: "When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in 7 years." (Quoted in Mackay, The Harvest of a Quiet Eye). Beyond that, I think this is probably a quote turned by someone else.

    All the best,

    I found a few with the same general idea, although they aren't nearly as witty:

    "Education is Man's going forward from cocksure ignorance to thoughtful uncertainty." -- Kenneth G. Johnson

    "Education is a progressive discovery of our ignorance." -- Will Durant

    “Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know.” -- Daniel Boorstin

    "The modern world belongs to the half-educated, a rather difficult class, because they do not realize how little they know." -- William R. Inge
