I know someone who has hyperthyroidism and the doctor gave them 2 suggestions:?

1)Take a radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid gland, but may get hypothyroidism and end up on life long medication

or

2)Take the same medicine before as a delay for the radioactive iodine.

Which one should the person do?

Before considering 1 or 2, Get a proper diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism is NOT a diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism is only a symptom.

If you have cancer (unlikely) have the radiation, have surgery, do anything you have to to get rid of it.

If you have Grave's disease (extremely likely), do NOT have radioactive iodine. As you already know, it will ruin your health for the rest of your life. You will be hypothyroid for the rest of your life. Plus you will be at higher risk to develop thyroid eye disease. plus you will STILL have Grave's disease. Radioactive iodine is NOT a cure for Grave's disease. Fire any doctor who tells you that it is, and RUN away as fast as you can.

The correct treatment for Grave's disease is methimizole.

Suggestions number 3, get tested for celiac disease to make sure it's not causing the disease. It would be really sad to find out that it was unnecessary.

If the test is negative, go with what the physician thinks is best. I'm surprised he gave you choices like this.
