Is the Origin concept Dead?

Queensland have won 4 series in a row with little or no resistance from NSW. Selectors who couldn't organise a r**t in a brothel let alone pick a football team. All the things that made Origin special gone from the game like massive one on one hits, spectacular trys, mad aggression and of course the occasional punch up.

The last 2 games especially have been pretty ordinary. Is it worth continuing or has it run it's course. I know if I had paid to go to the game last night I would be pretty pi**ed off.

Update:

hodmandod77 - You Sir are obviously easily pleased. The only memorable things about the last 2 matches are the refereeing mistakes, certainly not the football. I've watched better club games this year

i agree with what you have said but also the fun has gone out of it to.

When you see the games of old you see the pre game and halftime entertainment of giant toads chasing the little cockroaches and then the roaches turning on the toad and beating it until someone runs out with a fire extinguisher done up to look like a giant can of bug spray.

Bring back the biff but also bring back the fun.

Dead? Not quite. I believe there should be only one game per year. A super game, held at about this time of year. Alternating between Brisbane and Sydney. If a team has an off game....tough titty, try again next year. State of Origin is too demanding on the girlie aboy players we have today, and interupts the regular season too much. Without State of Origin, each team would be able to play every team twice instead of the stupid draw we have.

People who say last night's game was a good one, one of the best wins in Origin history, would have to be Queenslanders. Sure, there were blatant refereeing mistakes, but for the first 40 minutes, it looked like Qld were playing the Wee Waa under 12 netball team. State of Origin certainly doesn't have the mongrel in it that used to be there.

I don't think so. Last nights game was probably the worst, most mistake riddled game of origin I can recall, but I think the concept is still sound.

I was at the game last night and there was still plenty of passion from the fans there.

When both teams are firing it's the best quality footy in the world.

NSW just need to get their act together and the referees need to stop making crucial errors, especially video ref blunders.

With the pressure of losing 4 series in a row now gone I'm hoping we'll see a better performance from NSW in the next match. They really need to make some selection changes though, especially in the halves.

I don't think you can criticize the concept, just the times & rules they play under. What would happen now if a player did a 'Les Boyd' on someone and broke their jaw, he'd be put out for life.

I also remember when NSW were on top. Qld have picked players who have all reached the football prime of their careers, so have been lucky. It all goes in cycles. If NSW stick with the nucleus of players, they will eventually come good. Fortunately for Qld, the NSW selectors never do!

I am a proud Qld supporter, so I am enjoying the good times while they last.

Look Mate, Origin is about doing anything for the win, glory and pride.

With 7 players sick before the game (one using a drip the whole day) and 4 players players injured during the course of the game, the Queenslanders fought on. Sure it wasn't pretty and most people will agree the NSW team played like crap, but the spirit of origin was well and truly showed by the Queenslanders that night, which made it one of the sweetest victories ever in my opinion.

Not dead - NSW is rebuilding. It's not that long ago that we (the blues) had Fitler, Johns, Fitzy etc, and had some sort of dominance over QLD. You need to seriously look at the quality of the QLD side, and stop complaining when a whole team of debutants can still make some sort of game against the superstars.

Basically, Origin can never be dead. Watch the third match in QLD - an apparent dead rubber, but the stadium will still be packed.

No, its not dead but Qld does have the upper hand and I feel it will stay their way for a while to come. In the "good old days" the Maroons could only select from the Broncos and players who slipped through their fingers. Now there are three clubs in Queensland with a possible fourth being looked at in Rockhampton. This will only see more Queenslanders available and our administration is looking at other states for teams. Utilise the Central Coast, use the Coast and all of its juniors.

HELL TO THE F*&KIN NO BRO. I'm a Kiwi and would watch this over any international, why, beause I know it is the best 26 players in the world playing each other. Don't get me wrong, I am a kiwi and love my country and support them when ever we play, but the history of Origin just gets me ready whenever they kick off. I agree that alot of things of past era have been taken away from the game but it doesnt mean the sport is easier than before, quite the opposite. I too would love to see the all ins and **** hitting the fan, but Rugby League has moved passed that now and become a clever mans sport. I to would like to see the entertainment factor come back but I think it is more credit to the better defense structures they have these days.

Yes, it has and rules should be change to even it up. That was the reason for the creation of state of origin because NSW won all the time.

I think there should be a limit on the number of players who do not play in a state. Say a maximum of 8 players who do not play in qld or NSW can be eligible for each team, and the rest have to be chosen from that state. In the 17 you would have 9 state players and the other 8 eligible. Just a suggestion anyway

The year Origin will have run its course is the year the Earth gets too close to the sun for life to exist.

    Billions of years away.

Little or no resistance? Every series since 2001 has finished with a 2-1 scoreline (except 1-1 in 2002).

It has got a little ordinary, but certainly not dead. Problem is NSW league is struggling taking away the competitiveness.

PC day and age is the reason for the G rated action we get these days. Not the players fault! If they start serious brawls or feral head highs they'll just be suspended and vilified in the media.

And your right about the NSW selectors!
