A GASKET SEALER WOULD HELP TO HOLD THE GASKET IN PLACE ON THE PAN. THEY LIKE TO SLIP N SLIDE WHEN TRYN TO PUT BACK ON ENGINE. SILICONE WONT HOLD IT AS WELL. ALSO IF THERES ANY JOINTS TO THE GASKET ADD A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THE JOINTS SO YOU GET A GOOD SEAL

  • Depends on the brand of gasket . There are some self sealing gaskets out there , but most do require some sealant . Silicone is ok for the ends but use permatex or K & W on the sides if not self sealer

What does the directions tell you? Every new gasket I end up getting has directions telling me what to apply/not to apply.

Or before you go and buy the gasket ask the parts person behind the counter they will know.

    But if you must know...

Yeah .......Applying silicone usually causes the gasket to slip and bulge out when tightening the pan bolts down.

I'm not a big fan of oil pan gaskets.......they tend to leak after a little time.......sure you can snug them up......but eventually they compress so much they break and split.

I usually just RTV my pans to the block.

either way use one or the other not both.

(although sometimes a little is required it the corners of the oil pump and rear main seal retainer areas in addition to the gasket......but just a small dab usually)

oil pan gaskets are usually made to work without silicone
