A Commercial DOG TREAT KILLED My Dog,?

Although I have not had a necropsy preformed on the dog, I know it was the one with (parsley and eucalyptus) that caused it. My husband and I left the house and while gone the dog ate at least 3/4 of the bag, I found it empty on the floor, this was around 10 p.m. At approximately 3 a.m.she went outside, I did not know her dog door was closed, at 8.a.m we found her dead, she had regurgitated, and it was on her mouth. This was only 2 days ago.

Later I found the food should only be given to adult dogs (she was 9) which means it is not good for developing systems. It also states no more than 5 a day should be given, I did not know that but I was only given her 1/2 to 1 a day anyway. But dogs get into things, she had eaten lots of chocolate before and other things she should not but none of it killed her ( she liked to get into things) she had even eaten other dog treats before.

Earlier that same day I stopped my 31 month old granddaughter from eating them, can you imagine, if they should not be given to developing systems, what could have happened to her, if she had eaten any amount of them?

Here are a few web sites that show the danger of eucalyptus to animals.

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plant...

http://www.enotalone.com/article/9284.htmlp and http://www.peacehealth.org/kbase/cam/hn-2086009.ht...

The question, has anyone else had any problems with that product, (it's suppose to bust the breath of bad odor)?

Update:

Thanks for everyone's answers so far, but I though I would tell you that the FDA was not happy about the situation either, so if this product does come off the market we will know why. In addition a couple of retailers are checking into this as well, and want answers.

Update 2:

Also she may have consumed more than the package indicates, but a dog company is suppose to take things like that into account, after all dogs get into things.

Update 3:

lexie you are right, she was more than a dog, she was my canine daughter. She went on vacations with us and any where else I could take her, and she was a big girl a Weimaraner. I honestly have to say I am broken hearted. Not just because of her death, but from the depths of being, I truly believe it was the treats. You know your dog, especially when you have had her for 9 years.

Update 4:

Annie, sorry for taking so long to answer. Had some more bad days. Maggie ate all of them, I did not have a necropsy done, and we did not call the vet. However, called the ASPCA, who in turned directed us to the FDA, and they did not appear to be happy, especially when you take into account of the developing system aspect and what could happen to a small child like my granddaughter if they ate them. The company gave the typical pat answer. When my husband 1st started making phone calls he thought I purchased them from Target instead of where I bought them f. When Target called my husband explained he had made an error and I had not purchased them from there, and may I say Target was more concerened than the company I actually purchased them from. I have a new found respect for Target, because the man my husband talked to said, even though I did not buy the product from them because they sell it, and if even one dog has lost its life they want it off the shelves.

Update 5:

Wolf, the problem is dogs cannot read, and you would expect a company to take into account that animals and children get into things they should not.get into. ASPCA, on the web site, I recommended, states eucalyptus oil is toxic to animals, except the Koala Bear, and the mere fact they would put it in a product, to me is just plain irresponsible. Weimaraners are infamous for being garbage hounds, and that was her ownly real fault, she was such a sweet loving soul, Maggie had gotten into a lot of things in the past, however none of them killed her.

Get a necropsy done, and find out the *real* reason the dog died.

And if this information [no more than 5 a day] was on the bag; you *will* lose the lawsuit.

And you'll have a very weak case anyway. They have no way of evading a dog from ripping open the packaging; you do. They'll claim that it was owner mishap, and that will be the end of that thought, no matter how much you fight.

And companies can put whatever they wish in a dog's food or treats. Whether it be chocolate or eucalyptus. As long as they state that the food should not be eaten in large amounts, and they clearly state that it's an ingredient: it's left up to the owner to do research before feeding the dogs.

I am so very sorry about your dog ..

hate to use the word " dog" .... they aren't dogs to us, they become our children

but I doubt very much if it was the biscuits that did this

there is such a small amount of eucalyptus oil that goes into them, it would never be enough to cause any animal harm. If you read the ingredient list, you will see there is not much of the oil in there.

Because they say just 5 biscuits a day is standard for dog treats, wanting you not to make your dog's entire diet just from the biscuits alone.

I think the only reason that someone would not like these biscuits is because of the corn and the BHA/BHT in them

I really think it was something else and the fact that he consumed these biscuits was just a coincidence

again so sorry about losing your girl

This is so tragic to read such a thing

to lose a dog that has been failing is so devastating but to lose a healthy dog goes totally beyond comprehension

so very sorry for your loss

are you having the remaining biscuits tested

was your vet able to give you any information at all

has the company of the biscuits contacted you

sorry for the questions, I know you are suffering

    For each hour

    of your loneliness

    I wish you a Day

    of comfort

    for each minute

    of grief

    a year of peace

    And for every tear

    a thousand

    reasons to smile

if you ever want to email me for any reason

please do not hesitant to do so

    Thinking of you .....

You have no idea if it was the treats unless you have a necropsy done. You certainly can't sue based on speculation. Even if it was the treats, your dog ate far more than guideline stated on the food.

I am sorry about your dog.

Before you make these accusations you better get a necropsy done or you can be sued by the company your are accusing of killing your dog. Tread very carefully on matters like this unless you have facts to back up your accusations.

That is not a sick thing to do at all. I can see where you're coming from, and if anyone says it's cruel, it's because they're the "up-on-soapbox-know-it-all-vegans" who are completely oblivious to the fact that the food chain includes human beings, and that it's nature and healthy to consume other animals AND that they will be dying way sooner than the rest of us because they're not getting much-needed nutrients. HOWEVER, I don't think this is a good plan. It will be very very very hard work to breed the rabbits... keep them healthy enough for consumption, ect. ALSO.... this is the most important part... Dogs require a specifically balanced diet of meats, vegetables and such, and it's very hard to achieve the proper ratios of nutrients by mixing and preparing your own dog food. It's much better to leave it to the professionals and just buy your dog some top quality dog food, unless you've been trained to know how much of each ingredient is required to provide the correct balanced diet.
