Toy for an active 5 month old?
My son is 5 months old and can flip onto his stomach and is desperately trying to crawl. He gets quite fed up on his playmat and doesn't enjoy sitting in his bouncer for more than about 10 mins. I play with him pretty much all day but would love to find him something that will keep him engaged on his own for a little longer whilst i get on with some household stuff!
Any suggestions? Is it too early for a door frame bouncer toy and are they even healthy?

Do you have an exersaucer? My twins love their exersaucers and will play / bounce around in it for good periods of time.
We live in an older home with lots of moldings around the door frames so I am not comforable with the door frame bouncers . . . so no opinion there.

When my son was 5 months it was hell trying to find him something to do as all he wanted to do was crawl, even though he couldn't, and it frustrated him. He was able to roll to what he wanted, but that still didn't satisfy him that much.
We tried play mats, and bouncers and all that junk but nothing worked, we ended up getting him a door frame bouncer, as this was all that really kept him amused. There is a lot of controversy in whether they are good with children or not, but if you follow the directions carefully and keep a close eye on him there should be no problem at all.
Now at 8 months old my son is more content in crawling after the cats every where, so it all worked out for the best, and no health problems from his bouncer either.
Good luck.

It is actually a great time for a door frame bouncer - I was going to suggest either that or one of the standing bouncer/activity centers (which are more pricey and take up more room, but can be a lot of fun). we have a doorway bouncer -- I just limited my dd's time in it when she started out since our dr said that before 6 months their back muscles aren't always strong enough; it took her a while to get the hang of it anyway. But she definitely did enjoy it from that age. Otherwise she spent a lot of time being frustrated until she actually did learn to crawl, then she was much happier again.

he can go in a door bouncer now but you need to stay with them the whole time so that wouldnt be useful while you needed to do housework. there are some baby walkers from 3 months + that he might like, i have ordered my daughter one and she is the same age as your son. also a 'trekker' you can get them in mothercare i will be getting for my daughter. like your son my daughter gets bored easily she has a mat and bouncer etc but its not good enough. buy him some rattles and musical toys you can get them almost anywhere and that can help distract him for a bit. you can also buy 'tummy time' toys which my daughter enjoys now and again. i know how hard it is to entertain a baby of this age, sometimes nothing works so if all else fails i let her watch a bit of tv cartoons or something, i know its probably not the best thing to do but she loves it.
