iPhone data plan and tethering on AT&T network!?
I have an iPhone 3G and I got it about 6 months ago. I do alot of traveling and sometimes it's really nice to be able to use a full size keyboard. So I found this download that unlocks the tethering feature on my 3.0 software and it works great. But I have heard AT&T can tell if you are tethering? Also I have heard the unlimited data plan is actually capped at 5gb. Is that true? Wouldn't that be false advertisement? So what are your thoughts on all of this? Yes I jail broke my phone but this download you don't need it to be jail broken so I restored my phone back to it's original un- jail broken form. I found jail breaking to be quite un-neccisary actually. Seemed pretty pointless to me. Anyways what are all of your thoughts on this? Thanks alot!! John K

yes at&t will be able to tell that you are tehtering and it may cost you up to 40+ dollars a month. The unlimited data feature is actually unlimited however on their broadband aircard unit there is a 5gb cap. If you are tethering so that you can use a full keyboard I suggest buying a bluetooth keyboard instead to avoid those hefty charges.

Well... obviously we do not have tethering or mms yet, but its being developed. Wasnt expecting 3G S to unveil itself until August. But, due to the release of the Pre... Apple had "other ideas and agendas" in mind... Sorry
As for the "tethering tracking", this is very true... and here is why... When anyone or anything wants to you the att internet or DATA upload/download bandwidth via a cellphone... anyone from a factory worker to Donald Trump... anything from a Nokia 2600 to the iphone 3G S... that frequency is transmitted through the national switch--the access point "APN". Think of this 'thing' as a national DSLAM of wireless.
When the APN is triggered for your phone number, it looks to see if you have the coresponding GATEWAY... which is only openned through the billing system if you have a motnhly feature... causing you not to occur data overages while using your cell phone since all data traffic will route through the free unlimted gateway... there are many gateways, each for a purpose. Hence--alot of features. However, the customer who chooses not to have the iphone data plan.. (LMFAO---bad move) will see thier next bill of $10,000 or greater... My record is seeing a $32,000 bill due to iphone stupidity by a customer... And yes--the charges are 100% valid... bye bye FICO score!
People dont understand... and by what i see online and on twitter... STILL dont understand---- Apple made its phone to constantly use DATA even if your not pressing buttons.... its called the internet phone-"iphone"---and people still do not want to beleive it...
The reason for this customer having a high bill becuase she never had or refused the iphone data unlimited feature... now its policy and madated to have it due to 1% of customer ignorance. Before the policy was ammened to make it mandatory, not having the plan never made the iphone unl data gateway to open, which inturn told the the switch to tell the billing system to... CHARGE PAY PER USE!
since the iphone has no tethering plan yet... any tethering gateway for the iphone is automatically closed... technically it doesnt exist yet... so there is no gateway! Its still under construction... so your answer is unclear.. Yes the MBs will be calculated and shown use... but will you get billed?!?!----I have no earlthy idea
my advised to you... pray to god the switch told the billing system to charge your tethering under the phones unlimited data plan (program confusion since there is no gateway) and not pray very hard to every faith on this planety that you were not charged pay per use tethering!
Good luck
All cell companies have DATA unlimited plans for cellphones., these plans do not cover tethering.. thats separate and listed as either DATA ACCESS, BROADBAND, TETHERING, AIRCARD, LAPTOP CONNECT, ETC... this data is what is capped at 5GB.. i dont know why, but the only exception is Alltel... which is truly unlimited (rumor) and which i heard is slower the 768kbps DSL. (rumor)
Good luck
