R12 systems have the same kind of valve that tires have and the same black caps. R134 systems have two different sized valves and a red and blue cap.

If your 93 is like mine and has never been changed over , it is an r12 system . To be sure , go to your local parts store and someone there should be able to look at the charge fittings and tell you . If you still have r12 and need a charge , you may be in trouble . While at parts store and if you find out you have r12 system , check on availability of r12 substitute . You still can't buy it yourself , but if available , you can at least get the system recharged . If none available , get ready to spend money to get it changed over .

In November of 1993, the "Clean Air Act" was signed, it went into effect in and became law in December of 1995, therefore phasing out the use of R-12, due to the content of CFC. It is still available, but is also extremely expensive. I recommend you find a good, reputable shop, have the system flushed and replace the R-12 (if that's what it turns out to be) with the more environmentally safe R134-A. it is a lot cheaper to swap the system out, then it is to buy a charge of R12. Also, Dont go looking for the "shrader valve," it will not tell you any information as to the type of refrigerant you have, only your vehicles data plate, which is usually somewhere on the firewall, has that information, or any decent shop could tell you. Good Luck, try to stay cool.

Theres a tag on it that tells you. I'm sure it's 134a. Even if it isn't, unless you have a stash of R12 you'll have to switch over.
Kit from Walmart is all u need to convert.

Your vehicle should be R-12 because GM vehicle switched over in 1994. You can't buy R-12 anymore, so converting it is your only option. Go to your local auto parts and buy a R-134a conversion kit. It should cost under $50 for everything. The kit has full instructions and any novice should be able to do it in less than an hour. Good luck!

You should have a sticker under the hood (on the compressor, evaporator, or fan shroud). Your truck was built when GM was changing to 134 so I don't want to hazard a guess. If nothing else, a dealership can tell you. My 95 chevy has 134 from the factory.
