who thinks this is wrong for an adoption shelter to do this?
i was trying to adopt a dog on in a shelter and they said i needed to fill out this adoption sheet of 100+ questions. which were pretty personal and one of them was What will you do if your pet is destructive (digs, chews, etc.): and i don't really discipline my pet so i knew i couldn't put that so i put this cause i saw it on a pet whisper show wack him
on the nose and say no or squirt him with water and say no. now i didn't mean wack like beat him im meant it like pat like and this is what these "lovely" people had to say after about 2 weeks of not answering any of my emails about what the next step and the dog
After further reviewing your application, it has been decided that we
cannot approve you for adoption due to the fact that you indicated you
would use questionnable training methods -

I am sorry, but I agree with them.
They may be afraid that you don't have enough knowledge to be able to train or control a dog and they wouldn't want to deal with an abuse case.
They have to error on the side of caution.
The best thing that you can do is to get with a REAL dog trainer, not the "pet whisperer" or any other "entertainment" type show and see if you can learn the best methods for training. Once you have done this and shown the effort, they may be able to rethink their position.

I am a foster mom for a dog rescue, and I'm sorry, but we would not approve an application with the given choice of words. Fortunately, we always give adopters advice and different ways to correct a behavior. If they will heed our advice we will think about allowing an adoption to take place but only if we think it would be in the best possible interest for the dog.
We would rather hold on to a dog for years at a time then to just give the dog away to someone who would 'whack' them. Shelters, and rescues do NOT want a foster dog they've saved to end up back where they started i.e. in foster care or at a shelter, or in an abusive home.
With any dog, a whack isn't generally the best way to go about correcting a behavior. A firm 'NO' is the best way to correct them. If they continue to chew, try spraying something that tastes bitter to the dog to the object of its chewing. Or redirect their chewing to something that is appropriate. Try speaking with the shelter about the answer in question.

i was an animal control officer for several years. and you wouldn't be live the abuse i have seen. they screen people because of the abuse.
people get tired of there pets. and just throw them away like an old pair
of shoes. the best way i have found to keep a dog from chewing is to
just say stop in a loud tone. i have even put red peeper on shoes and even in a hole. and IT really worked, but i would have told you what to-do and gave you the dog as long as you had a fence and had good vet
records. but i don't think you were wrong. there are so many dogs put
to sleep ever wednesday at ever shelter in the united states.please don't get a dog that isn't neutered are spayed. because you'll be one of the people responsible for the death of another animal.

No they just shouldn't be just happy. Th fact is your answer was unsuitable for the dog you wanted to adopt. Rather than saying - I have some rather loose training methods but will seek training advice should the need arise - you spouted off some tv bs that does not work most of the time.
NEVER tell people what you think they want to hear, be honest and you'll get a lot further in life.

Yes, they should have been somewhat happy. I wouldn't mind the squirting, the whacking is questionable.
But consider this: to them, no home is better than a potentially abusive home. That's true. And a younger dog could probably tolerate an occasional "whack" (not condoning it, just saying)--far better than a "senior dog without teeth" could. Senior dogs are often very fragile.

Sorry, but I agree with the shelter. They have no idea who you are-you could be some kind of nut for all they know. You put an answer on an application that you obviously didn't take seriously, and got called on it. Deal with it.
Shelters are happy when they find the right home, not just any home. Most of those dogs are there because they were in just any home.

those training methods are improper, cruel and not effective. Stop wathing dog whisperer for training advise.. he is an idiot at best and is not a real trainer. His methods are old, outdated and dangerous.
The shelter has the right to decide what kind of home the dog goes to.
There's a fine line between "any home" and "a good home"

Given the fact that you are only 16 was enough for the shelter to refuse your application in the first place. (unless you didn't tell them the truth about your age) But your training methods border abuse IMO.

I think they're quite right not to adopt out to someone that says they're going to whack the dog. ESPECIALLY a senior. I certainly wouldn't.
What on earth were you thinking?
