Help with brakes on a 1995 Nissan Quest?
I just changed the brake pads on the front left of my wife's Nissan Quest. The old pads were worn very bad... down to the metal. After putting the new pads on (only on the left for now, because it got to dark do the right), I test drove it for a minute. Now the left side is overheating and smoking. Could this be because I haven't changed the other side yet and there's too much pressure on the left, or is there something else wrong? Should this quit after the new pads are broken in???
The rotors do need to be turned, at least... smells like metal to me
There is no noise, the wheel rotates freely, and there's no pull or vibration...

before you do anything change the right side and that should even it out. yes you were right. if you changed the left to new but not the right and they were worn to the metal, bad by the way, you have an inbalance and need to redo both then pump the brakes with the car off the reset the calipers. be careful when not changing the pads till the pad is absolutly gone cuz this can where the caliper out and the rotor could crack. be careful this mistake can get expensive.

Why didn't you replace the rotors? If you wore them down to the metal, the rotor specs are more then likely out and require replacing. As for the smoke, what does it smell like? Metal or a lubricant? The caliber needs adjusting I would imagine.
