11-wk-old sucks on hands?
My lovely, alert daughter has spent the last week sucking on her hands. I know it means she's discovered them, but need I be worried? We grudgingly allowed a pacifier for naps and nighttime b/c she clearly needed it. Now she's found her thumb. In less rational moments, I worry she won't take in the world around her because she's so focused on sucking her hands.
Just to clarify -- it's not a hunger cue in her case. If it were, she'd have eaten the house long ago!

My son is 4 months previous and he sucks on his hands all the time. He too is like scuffling with with something in his sleep..its style of alarming yet once you wake him, he's high-quality! My son isn't great on the pacifier element the two! His hands are continuously chilly too. This all looks extraordinarily time-honored!yet, in case you're traumatic purely communicate to your pediatrician!

Wow. Ever stop to think, to her, her hands are the world around her? Everything, even something as simple an mundane, to us, as hands is new and different to her. She is stimulating her suckle response, eye hand coordination, and stimulating the nerves in her hands by sucking on them. To a newborn, this creates a lot of things to think about. Take a deep breath and perhaps try to get some more rest.

You should not be worried. Most likely she will start teething soon or she just has a fascination for her hands. If you notice her hand, thumb, or really any finger in her mouth you should take it out to prevent tooth or hand problems. sometimes young children can get warts or blisters from sucking their thumb or hand. Also, sometimes it can signal that she's hungry. Keeping a pacifier in her mouth should help.

It's a mechanism to try to soothe/comfort herself. When I took my daughter for her 2 month checkup, that was one of the milestones the doctor wanted to know if she had achieved. Nothing to worry about- means she's right on target!

She is just using them as pacifiers people. She is comforting herself without a pacifier. Perfectly normal!

a babies hand is the best toy they will ever have. you say shes spent the last week doing this, well their still very new things for her and prob rediscovering them again and again when she wakes up.
its a phrase she'll pass through, if she is alert and loving as you say, you have nothing to worry about.
congrats on your lil angel!!!

This is usually a cue that's she's hungry and will be ready for the breast/bottle soon.
