No brown sugar in the house...?

If I don't have brown sugar, can I add a bit of molasses to white sugar when making chocolate-chip cookies? If I can, what are the proportions of molasses to cane sugar?

For each 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar called for in a recipe, use 1 1/2 tablespoons molasses plus 1 cup granulated sugar.

sometimes molasses adds an overpowering flavor... you might just want to add more white sugar and vanilla extract or maybe a diff extract
