How much will the Democrats' "Cap and Trade" bill really cost Americans?

Democrats say it will only cost a few hundred dollars extra per year. Republicans say a minimum of $1,500 extra per year for 1 person, but much more than that for a family of 4. What's the truth here? Even if the Democrats are right and it only costs $300 or $400 per year extra, isn't that still a tax on all Americans? Didn't Obama say he wouldn't do that?

The dems don't have a clue how much this will cost us in energy costs and jobs. While the CBO says $75/year, I don't believe them. I've heard about $3,000/year but we really don't know.

Even if it is $5, that a tax increase and a broken promise. He said a tax CUT for those making under $250,000. I make much less than $250K and I resent any tax increase.

Democrats supporting Cap and Trade are quoting a figure from a study done by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) which states that the average yearly cost per family will be $175 per year. But what they aren't telling you is that the CBO analysis does not include the effect of Cap and Trade on the economy! Talk about misleading.

    From the Wall Street Journal:

The biggest doozy in the CBO analysis was its extraordinary decision to look only at the day-to-day costs of operating a trading program, rather than the wider consequences energy restriction would have on the economy. The CBO acknowledges this in a footnote: "The resource cost does not indicate the potential decrease in gross domestic product (GDP) that could result from the cap."

There's really no definitive answer to this question. No matter how many economists, politicians, etc try to research the effects of a bill, no one really knows until it is put into practice. However, like you said, it will almost definitely raise all of our energy bills, which is essentially a tax on everyone in America, which is what the Democrats love to do. I honestly don't know what Obama "promised" to America, but anyone who expects a Democrat to not tax us in every way possible is hugely mistaken. I personally believe that we should enact the FairTax, which would tax everyone fairly and put an end to taxing random things, as this bill does. Check out Fairtax.org if you're interested.

In ten years the US will be a third world nation! Don't worry about a few hundred dollars, that is only the tip of the iceberg! All of the restrictions on using coal and other fuel will bankrupt the nation!

The price of food will go up, everything we ever buy will cost more!

Democrats spend money and raise taxes! Spending 12 trillion dollars already in the first 6 months - what lies in the future for us?

Will you be happy with the "change" left in your pocket!

Any creation of "green jobs" will eliminate 2 better paying jobs! King Obama wants to destroy America!

    Depends on what you count.

When the Dems say it will be less than $150 extra a year. But that is a conservative estimate. And it only counts your electric bill. It doesn't count the extra cost of goods thanks to the rising costs of making them. And it doesn't count the extra cost to homes because of the regualtions for the homes.

The total costs will certainly be MUCH higher than $150 a year.

$1,500 cost per year is very conservative at best - if you live in the northern states that will be alot heavier like $4,000 with the requirement of heating your house. Consumer products will cost more - food, postage, raw materials (metal), gasoline prices will increase to around $6 a gallon...and most importantly it will hurt all small businesses who will not be able to afford to "pollute" although CO2 is not a pollutant at all!!!

From what I hear they are going to tax the electric companies even more so the electric companies are going to raise their rates. Then Obama is also going to tax us on it to. This website says 90% so basically your electric bill will double with that alone. Plus the extra that the electric company is going to bill you.

It will also go up for Natural gas

Being that I live in a southern state and A/c is a need not a luxury my electric bill will probably be around $500.00 who can afford that in this economy?

It isn't a tax, but a cost increase across the board on everything that depends on energy, Electricity, gas and coal production will have cost increases that will be passed down to the consumer..both directly and indirectly

That liberal rag, the NY Times, says it will be the biggest tax increase in US history.

For the people Obama claims to care so much about, the poor and working class -- it will be the difference between getting by month to month -and- not being able to pay your bills.

It just blows my mind how many people really believe this Global Warming nonsense. To the people who answered this mentioning the environment -- if it's that DESPERATE, why do the wealthy people with the biggest carbon footprints pushing this scam not lower their footprints to the size of mine? Is it really that desperate? You do know your god, Al Gore, will be making tons of money off this, right? Why isn't Al Gore living in a home the size of mine -- one home -- if it's that desperate?

Obamanable Faux Man: Wouldn't Obama LOVE all the farms to go out of business? He'd have to take them over then to save them.

Where I live, our electric company is a co-op. Our annual meeting was last week. They said if this bill passes, we will have a $50.00 line-item charge added EVERY MONTH to cover compliance. Since I'm pretty good with numbers, that's $600.00 on my electric bill alone every year just for that! Take it from there. People are going to be shocked when they see the cost of things if this bill passes.
