What do you mean start? We have had diesels here for decades. Many cannot meet the strict emissions guidelines we have in many states. Diesel cars enjoyed reasonable popularity in the 70's. Volkswagen's, Peugeot's, and Mercedes were not uncommon.
I have driven the Avensis Turbodiesel. It was a great car!

Diesel is also more expensive then Gas in the U.S. If they got Bio-diesel to be cheaper then gas and the Stations for it and put out Bio-diesel cars then people would start driving them. To Americans it is about cost. Hybrids got big because gas was expensive. They only stay reasonable because the Govt offers rebates. Diesels were decent in the U.S. back when diesel was cheaper then unleaded gas.

We have lots of diesel cars here. The us has such strict emmisions laws though so a majority are gas. Plus diesel cars cost way more and the fuel is a lot more expensive. Our ambulances and fire trucks are all diesel. All big trucks are for truck driving and shipping as well.
