Well, I'm still in college, but am interning at a vet clinic.
Becoming a vet requires a Bachelor degree. My major is Animal Science, but I know other vet student who are taking Zoology or Fisheries and Wildlife. You need to take the GRE and have the results sent to the Veterinary Colleges you would like to attend. You need Animal Contact and Veterinary Observation hours (you can just call around in your area and ask vets if they mind if you observe them a few times a week for a few hours). Also, Veterinary Colleges have PreVeterinary requirements (meaning how many biology, chemistry, math, etc credits you need), you can go look them up on the AVMA website or go to individual college websites.
Apply to the Veterinary Colleges you would like to attend. Hopefully, the college calls you for an interview which you must attend. And after that they will hopefully send you a letter of acceptance.
Most common things we see are routine vaccinations. Most common illness is the "Unknown" where owners come in and can only say that their pets have stopped eating and drinking. Ear infections, allergies, and obesity are pretty common, too. We do get to see other things too though. Like this year we've seen a lot of mange, there was a puppy who had Parvo, etc.
So far, I'm loving it all (except for the Chemistry...only one semester of Organic left...YAY!)
