Is it OK to hit a seagull with a tennis racket?
On my walk to work I have to walk down a road where there's a seagull nest on top of one of the buildings. Whenever you walk past the seagull thinks you're too close and swoops down and attacks you. So twice a day I get smacked on the head by an angry seagull.
Can I warn it off by swiping at it? Can I actually attack it? What's the law if I injure or kill it?
Alternatively is there anything else I can do?
I can't really go a different direction to work and I'm getting very sick of the flying white rat with a sharp beak.

This is an increasing problem with all kinds of birds,if they nest in a busy area. All they are doing is trying to protect their young, which is a natural instinct for them. If you hurt it you end up with an injured bird and a nest of starving babies. Depending on where you live, you could be charged with animal cruelty.
Your solution would be to carry an umbrella and open it as you get near the attack area. It might make you look less threatening, so she won't attack you at all. Or if she does, it will protect you from the attack. Use an old umbrella so it doesn't matter if it gets a little holed.

If the seagulls are bothering you, I'd hit the crap out of it. My grandmother carried a stick on her walking trips to smack yapping dogs with it. Worked great.

Throw some food at it? Away from you?
Sorry hope this helps but I don't think there are any major laws for sea gulls
