What's the big deal with...?

Why does the government care if we laminate our Social Security Cards? It clearly says not to, however I do and so do many others. What's the point behind this?

Update:

I have to check many of them everyday and the brand new ones have "Do not laminate" on the part you tear the card away from, instead of on the back of the card itself.

Because it's harder to tell if it is a forgery when it's laminated and they need to be able to tell at a glance if it is real. The paper has a specific texture that helps prove that it's the real thing and not a forgery.

You're not going to jail for it or anything, and you'd be wise not to carry it around... I keep mine in a locked filing cabinet at home so I guess it's never been an issue.
