How do you find the multiplicity of an intercept?

I don't really understand what that means, I looked the word up in the index in the back of the book, but it doesn't say...

Multiplicity generally refers to how many times the solution occurs. Recall that an intercept is essentially the solution to a problem if it equals 0. So in something like y = (x - 3)^2, the solution would be x = 3 for y = 0 - the graph intercepts the x-axis at x = 3. In this case, x = 3 is the solution twice - if you expand that equation to y = (x - 3)(x - 3) and solve each factor, x = 3 is the solution for both. Thus this intercept of 3 has a multiplicity of 2.
