Dog Allergies and Malaseb Shampoo?

Need some help on a good allergy shampoo...Was reading about Malaseb Shampoo, as I have a Jack Russell Terrier, 5 years old, she gets allergies all summer for the past 2 summers. She scratches the heck out of her belly, and chews her paws. Took her to the vet last summer, gave her a allergy shot, which didn't help and told me to give her benedryl. Didn't help either. Symptoms went away after the weather cooled. I've changed her diet to Lamb and Rice, hoping that will give some relief, as was suggested by the vet as well. Also read about an anti-allergen dog food?? Anyone know of anything that would help with the itching and allergies? Got her babies (3) and none of them seem to have these symptoms at all Thanks!!

Honestly, check with your vet. Depending on what her skin is doing (for example, a yeasty kind of allergy) they can get you the shampoo you need. There's OxyDex, Malaseb, Relief, and several others made by that same company. Where I work, its usually either OxyDex or Malaseb that we're recommending to clients. However, Malaseb tends to be for the dogs who have "crusties" or thickened skin from their allergies. If your dog is just irritated and red, you can probably use any very mild soap-free hypoallergenic kind of shampoo regularly to sooth her skin.

As far as the "anti-allergy" food goes, that would probably refer to foods that use a protein source your dog hasn't been introduced to yet. For example: venison, rabbit, duck, etc. A lot of dogs have allergies to beef, corn, wheat, etc. Taste of the Wild, Raw Instinct, and several other types of food are "grain free" to minimize any potential allergy to grains. They're a little more pricey, but since your dog is small the bag will last you a really long time and you'll get your money's worth.

I have a bull terrier mix, Daisy, who has really bad allergies. I had her allergy tested, and it came back that she's allergic to several types of grasses, weeds, trees, etc as well as flea saliva. She doesn't seem to have any food allergies at all, but during "allergy season" she breaks out in hives and scratches like crazy. I've started her on allergy shots to lessen her reaction to the allergens and they've helped tremendously. Last summer, she was miserable. So far this year she's maybe 1/2 as itchy as last year. She's also on Benadryl and gets regular baths to sooth her skin.

But definitely consult your vet. Or even better, if you have an animal dermatologist in your area (and can afford it) that's worth a shot too.

Uh, I don't think there are any anti-allergen dog foods?

However, there are high quality dry foods out there

you could try like: Innova, Artemis, EVO, & Eagle Pack.

My parents' Coton De Tulear has allergies, and

after feeding Taste of the Wild (Salmon Forumula) it went away.

I hear Malaseb Shampoo COMBINED with the spray works wonders.

sounds like the dog needs an antibotic. flea dermitis is very common. with this there is always a secondary infection which after the shot they should be on a regiment of 2x's a day for 10days (pill) anibotic. also have your vet check for a thyroid condition. make sure to feed high quality food. dry food mixed w/ wet food might be in order to get his/her body working again. went through this myself. try bactine on the sores or itchy spots. worked on my dogs. good luck Dog's are awesome.

Have you tried the baby shampoo with oatmeal? It is the Johnson and Johnson kind but they do have other brands of it- found in the baby section of shampoo, it works great with our bully who has the same reaction. The lamb and rice is good, Purina one. But she may need something that is totally grain free like, taste of the wild etc etc - Also try medicated gold bond powder on her belly etc etc - it works to relieve the itchy and redness. My boy Toby, the brindle bully loves it and lays back so I can rub his belly with it!Hope that helps! Best Wishes!
