They are reasonably good looking, reliable, and simple to work on. Unlike a cheap butane lighter, the mechanism is not exposed, either for accidental lighting or getting dirty or making dirty in the pocket. When everyone smoked, they were a nice gift and could be bought with emblems and logos on them. Companies would get them made up for employees or to give to customers.
