Why are mitochondria absent in RBC of mammals?

Mitochondria are the cell organelles which produce energy for the cell , to perform it's basic activities.
Now, RBCs are designed for the maximum carriage of oxygen throughout the body. So, they cannot compensate with other organelles to provide room for Haemoglobin.
So, RBCs derive energy directly through glucose, by glycolysis that takes place inside the cell. The end product is Lactic Acid or Lactate.
Thus, mitochondria are absent, since the glycolysis meets the energy demands of the cell, plus, it doesn't take up the cell volume.
Hope I helped.

I think the lack of DNA,mitochondria and their DNA, may be an energy and space-saving issue. The red blood cell is packed with hemoglobin molecules so that it can carry the greatest amount of CO2 to the lungs and O2 back from the lungs. The more space there is, the more efficient the red blood is. However, red blood cells are somewhat fragile, since their membranes are quite thin. When they wear out and disintegrate or are "eaten" by the white blood cells, there's no great loss to the body, since new red blood cells can be made.

To save space for maximum oxygen and carbon dioxide, RBC donot have mitchondria. But still it will need enegy, and for that energy Glycolysis occurs in RBS, producing 2 molecules of ATP, and this process of respiration donot need mitchondria.

mitochondria is the power house of the cell it produces energy in the form of atp molecules. RBC or erythrocytes don't have any work for which they need energy because their work is transport of materials

mitochindria is 4 energy, RBCs don't need energy so they don't have mitochondria.
