the bootup screen takes a lot of time to load. i have disabled 3/4 of the startup options using msconfig. what might be the problem? defrag ? please tell me some utilities to help me.

ok, there are 2 problems

1. whenever i try to open any hard driveeg. D:\, it says "Recycler\S-9-9.......... not found. so everytime i want to open it i have to click on explore.

2.i have AVG free, and for some damn unknown reason, i am not able to update it. it started 3 days ago, i know there is a virus and Avg has gone mad, (i tried to read all the FAQs at their site) and i want to install another antivirus.

my question is-Is it safe to uninstall the antivirus? will that stupid virus do something to my system. (pls dont tell me to format the system, i have info worth Rs5000 and cant afford to lose it).

is there a safe procedure to install some other antivirus without um... losing my data!!
