randomvey: would compasses still work in Antarctica?
i know they'll work but would be useful? i mean, wouldn't it point north everywhere you go? or am i totally wrong?

Yes, you're quite wrong. Theoretically, you have to be exactly at the poles for the compass to not work. But practically that's not possible since the earth is hollow and you'll go right inside (probably never to return).
