Im a little confused. I am under the impression that elite footballers make considerably more than their basketball counterparts.

Well, because football is a contact sport and there are more big names in football like Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, Owens, etc. Basketball stars do get more but they get breaks and stuff and in football you play the entire game the entire season unless you get hurt which may affect you in the long run. And also, football is a lot bigger and has more fans of it so I hope this answers your question!
