Roommate skipped out.?
My son and four of his schoolmates leased an apartment for 1 year. One of the guys decided he was not going to return to school. Now he's not on the lease, but gave no notice whatsoever and stiffed the kids for the rent. Do they have any recourse, he agreed to his share of the rent for the entire year but by verbal agreement only.

Unfortunately the agreement should have been in writing. They do not have recourse. Good luck, advise the boys that if they do acquire another roommate to ensure there is a written agreement or that the new roommate be added onto the existing lease.

As far as the landlord is concerned, it does not matter, your son and his three roommates have to pay the rent.
Your son etc. can sue the guy who left. Given that there is nothing in writing, it will be more difficult but an oral contract is just as valid as a written contract. They will have to sue him.
