Driving Someone Else's Car...Do I need Insurance?

Okay lets say that I have my license but I don't have car. If I have a friend or a family that lets me drive their car and I get into accident...who's fault would it be? Mines or the owner's? And If I do drive someone else's car..do I need insurance to pay for the owner's car if I accidentally damage their car? Or no?

Update:

What if I don't have insurance butthey allow me to drive their car anyway?

Update 2:

The owner of the car needs to have valid insurance - both accident and liability insurance. He/she should know if that insurance covers drivers beside him/herself - family members or others. If you are under about 25 (or are a new driver), he/she should know if you are covered. If the owner does not know, then he/she needs to find out before you drive. If you are not covered, then both you and the owner may be liable for millions of dollars in a personel injury or other lawsuits. (Also: Be sure you have the owner's permission - not just the owner's teenage son or daughter - to drive the car.)

I don't know if you can purchase you own insurance to drive someone else's car. I have never heard of it.

Fault in causing an accident is determined by the police and insurance companies (and their lawyers). If you are at fault, you will pay if you are not covered. In some jurisdictions, people have 'no fault' insurance, and you could still be liable for some proportion of the damages, even if you did not cause the accident.

Bottom line: if you are the slightest bit uncertain that you are not covered properly by the insurance on the vehicle in question - don't drive it.

Your answer could vary from state to state depending on the bi laws governing that topic. Typically you can't get insurance on a car you don't own. Now if this was a parents car then you could be insured under their policy as a dependent driver. As for taking your buddies car to the store and getting into a crash that is a result of your part, his insurance is not going to cover that because you are not listed on this policy.

    Depends...

In California, the insurance follows the car not the driver (with some exceptions like rental cars).

Then it depends on how the auto insurance policy is written up. Some policies only covered drivers named on the policy. Other insurance companies extend coverage to unnamed drivers provided that the owner of the vehicle gives the driver permission to drive the vehicle.

My advice is to ask the insurance company. My girlfriend and I called our respective companies: Her insurance only covers her. My insurance covers me and any driver I give permission to drive my car and they get the same coverage I get. I don't drive my gf's car any more and thank goodness I didn't get an accident driving it!

Any accident is your fault. most policies cover what are called occasional drivers (meaning once in a while) and yes you should have insurance. There are 2 types of insurance (liability) which covers damages to the other people involved in the accident and (collision) which covers the vehicle you are driving In your case I recommend both types. When you purchase a car you have to be careful if you let the dealer get the insurance for you they usually will only get collision. Depending on how you pay for it. Most lenders require collision If you have to have collision as a requirement of your lender you should still care liability. It usually is a state requirement. It is cheaper to carry both and pay 1 insurance agent for 1 auto policy. you need to find a good and honest agent.

Do you need insurance if you drive someone else's car? That depends on what state you live in. It also depends on the car OWNERS auto insurance company. If the owner's auto insurance company has "permissive use" that allows you to driver their car and be covered. Ask about "permissive use".
