if you want to keep the fractions and not convert to decimals, you must find the lowest denominator of the fractions so you can add and subtract them.

of all the fractions noted, 16 is the LCD so you can convert the fractions with 16 as the denominator.

    2 3/4 = 2 12/16

    8 3/8 = 8 6/16

    5 2/16 = 5 2/16

adding the left side we get 15 20/16

do the same type of thing with the left side and them solve you equation

You look for the 'common fraction'

For example .. in the first case you can express everything in terms of 16ths ...

    ie. 2 & 3/4 = 2 & 12/16, 8 & 3/8 = 8 & 6/16, 5 & 2/16 = itself .

    the you add up the numbers (2 + 8 + 5 = 15) and the fractions (12 + 6 + 2 = 20) / 16 ... 20/16 == 1 & 4/16 ... 4/16 = 1/4

    Answer 16 & 1/4 ..

    2 3/4 + 8 3/8 + 5 2/16 =

    2 12/16 + 8 6/16 + 5 2/16 =

    15 20/16 or

    16 1/8.

    5 3/4 - 3 5/16 - 8 3/8 =

    6 12/16 - 3 5/16 - 8 6/16 =

    6 12/16 - 11 11/16 =

    - 4 15/16.

    Rather a strange presentation !

    I am reading this as

    Question 1

    2 ¾ + 8 ⅜ + 5 ⅛

    15 + 10/8

    15 + 1 ¼

    16 ¼

    Question 2

    5 12/16 - 3 5/16 - 8 6/16

    2 7/16 - 8 6/16

    - 6 1/16
