We do all the background checks required by law. While our laws are lax, our crime rate is no different than the various state with every possible law you can imagine. Most of the problems are with the street gangs in Phoenix...otherwise it's far safer here than many multi gun law states. The fact is, MOST gun crime happens where street gangs and drug gangs 'own' entire neighborhoods in the bigger cities. Small towns and rural areas....you just don't see that level of violence. Mexican gangs and drug cartels have access to the world black market in firearms. They don't have to sneak around and buy guns one at a time. If they want an arsenal of full automatic weapons they can get a truck load whenever they want. The tale about how US firearms are sent across the border is vastly overblown. Does it happen? Sure, but if some cartel manager required 100 AK47's, the Chinese government or the Russian mafia would 'unofficially' ship them over...as long as the cash was in those well laundered yankee hundred dollar bills. Besides, most firearms are illegal in Mexico and you need a background check, a license and a note from your mom to get on....yeah...sure!
