Ideas for removing pop-up virus?

Hi guys

Am at the end of my tether with my laptop. Since my husband downloaded a game on facebook we have had a pop-up virus. Pages are randomly loaded either on top or behind of the page I'm using and quite often this means the internet has to close completely. The pages are being loaded through incentaclick.com.

I had McAfee (free with my internet) but this could not even find the virus on a scan. I have therefore switched to AVG but although the scan found the virus and removed it, it did not work.

Any suggestions as to how to get rid of this would be gratefully received.

Many thanks!

Update:

Thanks guys. Have tried Windows Defender and no luck. My pop-up blocker doesn't as it's a new page rather than just a box.

Will definately try your suggestions though. Fingers crossed!

    Hi Rach,

    Here's how to detect and remove any malware...

    In order to successfully remove malware infections (viruses, spyware, adware etc) from your PC you need to follow a methodical approach as well as using effective (and free) tools. There’s a decent guide covering this that you can work through at My Slow PC http://www.myslowpc.co.uk/ – click on the “Troubleshooting” link. Here’s my advice from it:

    1.) Turn System Restore OFF so any infection that you remove is not restored.

    2.) Scan with a combination of the best detection utilities as you’ll find different scanners can sometimes pick up different infections. E.g.

    * McAfee Stinger – a free stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses.

    * SpyBot Search & Destroy – a spyware/adware scanner

    * Lavasoft Adaware – for spyware/adware

    Note – it might be a good idea to disconnect your network connection once you’ve updated them with the latest virus/spyware definitions. This is due to the fact that often an infection is trying to spread over your network.

    3.) If the above fails or you’re not sure if you’re still infected, when you start your PC tap the F8 key, select “Safe Mode” and repeat the scans once you’re connected.

    I hope the above helps, as mentioned the guide above is a lot more detailed and the My Slow PC site is pretty useful. Good luck!

    It is most likely not a virus but spyware/adware which is why your anti-virus didn't have much luck. Also Windows Defender is not that great at detection. Read this spyware removal guide and follow the steps. It includes using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware that others have recommended and other needed steps.

    http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/spyware-re... .

    Here is an excellent article to learn how to be safe on the internet, http://surfthenetsafely.com/index.html . It covers everything from viruses, spyware, and firewalls in great detail. The links in it that do not work right are pointing to http://www.techsupportalert.com/pc/security-tools....

    Just pick the right category of security program they are talking about. The website was reorganized so that older link in the article does not work right now.

    Be sure to also scan any external hard drive, flash drive, USB storage device that you use as well. I have even heard that iPods can be infected so be sure to scan those too.

    If you are running Windows XP, you should be able to download Windows Defender free of charge from Microsoft which helps keep malware and spywar at bay. Its included already with Vista.

    Have you run Windows Update recently? Make sure that you do this as Microsoft release the Malicious Software Removel tool every month which often gets rid of these.

    Lastly, if these products don't help then BitDefender Total Security (you can it from http://www.ixcg.com/ cheaply), or Adaware are both good.

    if you know exactly what website is doing the popup then simply in IE go to manu > Tools > Security > Restricted websites . Add it in there, it will be blocked. Or use firewall for blocking that or any unwanted attack from internet,

    As already answered - malwarebytes will find it and fix it.

    I suggest you then get spybot s&d (just google for it) and use that permanently.
