Best plants for north facing terrace?
Hi guys, bear with me as I have absolutely no idea when it comes to gardening!
I live on Dartmoor (windy, varying weather but quite wet) and have a north facing terrace (I live on quite a steep hill) which leads down to the rest of my garden.
I am looking to have some plants in pots along the terrace to include some climbing plants to run along the railings. Unfortunately I really don't know where to start as generally when I find something that looks 'pretty' it says suitable for south facing gardens.
Any suggestions. Especially welcoming plants that are not too difficult to keep as I even managed to kill a cactus once!!
Cheers!

Without knowing your location it's hard to say if these are cold hardy, but they are excellent choices for the ideas you have in mind. See the link to each plant profile below for details to verify it is locally hardy.
A large vine such as a passionflower may do well in this situation but these are such immense plants that you would be forever cutting them back in such a limited locale. Here are three more modestly sized shade tolerant vines with flowers that make fine choices for all but the coldest climate
Clematis armandii Unlike all the other deciduous clematis, this cold tender white flowered form is an intensely fragrant spring bloomer. The plant is evergreen featuring long sword shaped leaves. It is well known for performing at homesites beneath pine forests.
Vinca major 'Variegata' Known as periwinkle, this larger of the two Vinca species makes an exceptional plant due to the variegation. In spring large silver dollar flowers dot the foliage with intense periwinkle blue. This is a very tough plant resistant to gophers and deer.
Trachelospermum jasminoides Star jasmine is a thick leathery leaf twiner that turns chain link fence into a dark green hedge like barrier. In spring it produces a multitude of small white star shaped flowers that are intensely fragrant.

Use ivy for the climber. Other plants that do well in a northern exposure: ferns, hostas, caladiums, bleeding hearts, and lilies of the valley. You may have a hard time with any of these though, most plants don't like it too windy.
