Any really useful motorway driving tips? :)?
Will be my first time driving on the motorway this wednesday, I know how you're supposed to drive and what to do and stuff, but any experienced tips that could be of help?

Keep left when not overtaking.
Always check your blind spot before changing lanes.
Indicate.
Keep your distance.
Be polite and give way to other drivers waiting to pull out/join the carriageway if it's safe to do so.
And say thankyou if people give way to you.

Seriously, the biggest one. Don't change lanes without checking over your shoulder in your blind spot first. People often just sit there without putting their foot down to overtake, or they can't cos its heavy traffic. So - signal, mirror, shoulder, manoeuvre.
Read the road ahead. It doesn't take much to work out someone is about to pull out in front of you. If they're coming up fast on a slow vehicle in front of them, or passing a slip road where vehicles are joining the motorway, then they're gonna be pulling out. Especially if they're driving a mercedes.
Apart from cars driving too close in heavy traffic and heavy rain, the most dangerous part of a motorway is just before or just after a junction. Bear it in mind.
Don't forget you're doing 70 [yeah, right! ;o) ] The relative slowness of other cars to your own speed can be deceptive. Things can happen very very very very quickly on a motorway, normally when people get suprised or shocked. If you suddenly realise you're gonna miss your junction then just chill. Just go on to the next one.
In a tailback, the fastest lane is the slow lane with all the lorries. You can measure how you're getting on by picking a noticeable vehicle next to you. If after a few minutes he's ten cars ahead of you, then you're in the wrong lane.
Heavy traffic tends to pulse - accelerating heavily and then braking heavily, for no other reason than the weight of traffic and people are driving too close (why they put variable speed limits on the M25 & M42). Just hang back. Really.
If the car's overheating in that tailback, turn on the hot air blower to get the heat out of the engine.
Just remember, you're better safe than dead, ...or worse. On the other hand if something freaks you then let it go. If you lose your cool you're a hundred times more likely to have a smack further down the road.
A miss is as good as a mile.
My personal favourite these days - listen to your instinct. You may suddenly realise you're not actually comfortable going as fast as you're going, for no reason whatsoever. Just lighten off the gas for a few minutes. You'll probably never know it just saved your life.
This happened to me about a month ago. If I hadn't lightened on the gas I would 100% have been in a pile-up.

Make sure you have enough petrol before going on the motorway the services charge rip off prices for petrol
don't, put you foot down
don,t race the other cars
do not talk on your mobile phone or send texts while you are driving
don,t forget to take a break if you are feeling tired
don,t get up the backside of the big trucks
try and keep two lorry lengths away from them in fact
and if you do overtake a car or truck dont sit in the middle lane afterwards pull in to the near lane and take heed of the signs on the back of trucks
IF YOU CAN'T SEE MY MIRRORS I CAN'T SEE YOU !!
they are there for a reason
and above all have a safe journey Big Mac

3 years and you havent been on the motorway?? It took me 3 hours of getting my 1st car to give it a try. Good tips though, go on your own at first at 2am on a sunday night when its deserted just so u can get the hand of things. Don't even bother with the 3rd/4th lane to begin with because everyone thinks they are michael schumacher there - stick in the 1st lane and move over to pass trucks then go straight back in again when its clear. Minimum speed is 50mph so you can go 50 if you like and don't worry about other drivers they will pass you if they need to. ALWAYS check your mirrors before changing lanes and indicate in good time, also ALWAYS check over your shoulder just before you move over as your blind spot will be much more dangerous than on normal roads. Keep an eye on your mirrors all the time too so you know the location of others around you. If going from 1st to 2nd lane also watch out for people coming from the 3rd to the 2nd. Be ready to move over to lane 2 at sliproad entrances too where people are getting on the motorway to give them room or be prepared to slow down a little. Finally, it can get pretty nasty at busy times when theres hardly any room to change lanes so match your speed to the other lane then find your space and move across slowly and you should be ok.

Don't hog the middle lane.
THe middle and outside lanes are both FOR OVERTAKING ONLY
and when you're joining the motorway - speed up in the Acceleration lane to the speed of the traffic on the motorway - dont dawdle up it and stop at the hatched lines - some people do really do that and it's bloody dangerous

my old man put the shitters up me when i first went to drive on the motorway, like it was some horrific thing that you wouldnt come back from, with people desperate to hit you or run you off the road
clutching the wheel in panic waiting for the worst to happen my face slammed against the front window looking everywhere after the first 10 miles i couldnt see what the fuss was about!
all i will say is keep an eye on where you want to get off the motorway because its a bas*tard if you have to go to the next exit just to back track.
remember its just like a duel carrageway check your mirrors
but most of all just be careful of the lorries because they are the only ones who try to ''get'' you,
really you will be fine x

Use your mirrors about 10 times more than you do ordinarily, and don't drive down the overtaking (middle lane) when the motorway is empty

Check your mirrors often, to be aware of other motorist coming up behind at a faster speed. Dont be in a rush to get where you are going,
Look well ahead of the car in front. Have a nice motor day
