You will always be considered an addict because if you are still addicted to the drug... even if you don't do it anymore.
Like... if you took that drug once again far into the future, the addiction would most likely take over again.
As an alcoholic i know this.
I haven't had a drink in 7 and a half years - but i'm still an alcoholic - i'm still addicted to alcohol. i just refrain myself from drinking it because ive realized that i don't need it, and my life is much better without.
But if i where to drink it again (which i would NEVER) then i would most likely not be able to stop, and id be drunk and down the same old crappy road again.

My ex-best friend (he's a guy) turned to drugs and forgot about me and many others. He became addicted to heroin and meth. It's really horrible. Before he consumed drugs, he was so bright, so positive, so humorous, no one could compare. The drugs took away that special glow that he had.
Addicts can become clean. They can get rid of their addiction if they are willing to deal with the withdrawl and what not. It's really hard, I must say. (Watch the movie: "Candy" and you will know). If "he" doesn't do drugs anymore, he's not addicted to drugs anymore. Therefore he is not a an addict. Whoever this person is, I really hope that he stops using drugs. Wish you both the best of luck.

well if he can honestly stop his addiction, then he should no longer be considered an addict. but it is really hard for them to stop any addiction to any drug. be as supportive as you can. Im in a situation where Im wondering the same thing, if they can ever change. For their own sake, I hope so!

Addicts can develop cross-addictions. If a one time drug addict, the mental pattern is still there. It is probably part of who they are. Even if they don't go back to drugs, they could easily move to something else.

Addiction has something to do with the brain, and they might stop doing the thing they are addidcted to, but they still want to do sometimes. Just be supportive and let him know your there.

oh yes they CAN change. only if they are willing to. its takes a lottt of persistence to quit.
no one said it be easy, and there WILL be a lot of trial and error, cravings, and withdrawl. but yes, they will get through it.
