Were 7/7 and 11/9 our wake up calls to world suffering?

Did they wake us up to the atrocities our governments and big business perpetrate abroad in our names? In a sense were they a wake up call to the suffering we spread with our ignorance and decadence? Did we deserve it?

Update:

By our governments I mean those of the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Update 2:

For my American friends 7/7 was a terrorist attack in London on the Underground train system and the bus network.

If you think they were wake-up calls then we must be very heavy sleepers because we still haven't woken up enough. Our governments are being led by big business into all sorts of murky waters but they aren't alone. I'm reading a book about the Taliban (not by a western writer but by an Egyptian) which details very clearly the atrocities and inhumane leadership perpetrated by their religious fanatics against their own people (mostly against the weakest sections of their own).

So I think possibly the two events helped to open our eyes to what was and still is happening everywhere; and worse, being alowed to happen.

Maybe but that's not the way they were interpreted. At leas for America we tend to think that we are little angels who have never done anything wrong and that we were simply the innocent victim of some crazy terrorist that "hates us for our freedoms." The truth is they don't hate us for our freedoms, they hate us because we have been screwing them over for decades. The line that the Bush admin sold us was a shortcut to thinking. They, like many "conservatives" would rather go for a quick fix than address the source of the problem. The same is true for education, energy...yada yada the list goes on and on. To win the war on terror we need to not only show that we have the capacity to defend ourselves but we also need to show that we have the capacity to understand, or at least try to understand why these people hate us so much. "they hate us for our freedom" or they hate us because we have what they don't is just stupid.

    You are living in fantasyland.

    Quite the opposite is true.

We have eliminated more world suffering in the past 50 years than any other nation on the face of this earth in the history of this world.

The United States of America has created more wealth and prosperity for the world than any other nation in the history of our planet.

Both of the attacks on 9/11 and 7/7 were perpetrated by some of the most vicious, vile, evil pieces of garbage that have ever lived.

If there was any wake up call it is that we must get rid of The Muslim Terrorist Garbage and put them in the landfill where they belong.

They are not fit to live with civilized people. If the Muslim Terrorists are not willing to live in peace with us, then we have the right and the obligation to put them in the landfill so they do not disrupt the lives of civilized people.

    You should know better.

    What is wrong with you?

Americans dont deserve constitutional protections anymore, we have no balls to go to washington and demand the repeal of the patriot act, or the federal reserve act (I could go on forever).

As far as 7/7 goes, not many americans know what you are talking about (sadly). They would not know that the drills (of bombs on buses) were being preformed at the time of the "attack" Same on 9/11 with cheney's war games. Who knew that these far fetched scenarios would of turned in to reality as they were "practicing " their exercises?

You got it bad with the EU, we are next with the NAU. I give it till the dollar collapses...2012 to be exact.

They should have been a wake up call to the dangers of religion.

It has taken us 500 years to get the church off our backs in the UK. 500 years of repression, persecution, torture and murder.

It's only now the church has been de-clawed that it appears meek and harmless. A lot of Europe is still struggling to rid itself of the last remnants (e.g. Ireland and Italy).

Even the US is still struggling with Christian fundamentalism.

But in most of the Middle East the war is lost and the fanatics rule. And in other parts of the world Islamic repression with all of its horrors is on the rise.

To quote Christopher Hitchens "God is not great - Religion poisons everything"

    BS !!

the waking up the world needs is for a bunch of backward nations to look at the cases of China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Chile and others and figure out why they are successfully getting ahead and the other second and third world nations are falling farther and farther behind.

There is nothing wrong with most of Africa that wouldn't be cured by a complete culture transfusion.

Your formatting leads me to believe that when we discuss "our" governments we may be talking about different entities.
