I have about $1200 to spend on a laptop, any advice?

This price is flexible, but not too flexible. I'd like to find the best laptop I can get for this amount of money...something that will be quite good now and still be at least usable in 5 years.

I don't play processor-taxing games, but I do video editing, sound recording and editing, and I tend to just do a lot of tasks at the same time.

The Dell Studio with upgrades seems like the best bet right now. Can anyone offer some advice?

I have 15+ years experience with Windows and 15+ years with Macs. I suggest that you consider the 13" MacBook Pro for $1,200. It has just received major upgrades and is a phenomenal computer. The batter life is rated at 6 or 7 hours now, they have an upgraded screen, they're faster, etc. Those who own Macs LOVE their computers and are very thankful that they've left the world of Windows. Of course, there are many Mac-haters out there. They generally are misinformed about Macs, Mac software, etc. And, they probably never owned one. Look at the user reviews for MacBooks on Amazong. Read Consumer Reports & other PC magazines. Macs use a very stable and reliable operating system (Leopard). The number of viruses with Macs is minimal to almost non-existent. Whereas Windows and viruses are like bees and honey. As well, Windows requires a lot of RAM to run. Leopard requires LESS. So, you do not need as much memory on a Mac (as you do with a Windows PC).

Like I said, I've had 15+ years with both Windows and Macs. And, I think that it'd be worthwhile for you to explore Macs. Maybe they're not for you. Maybe you want a bigger monitor, etc. They do tend to be more expensive up front. But, in the long run you'll be very thankful for your investment. And, you'll have 1/10 the problems that Windows users experience. Of course, many Mac owners own their Macs for years because they love their machines and they are built to last.

There must be a reason that Macs are amongst the highest rates computers on the market. There must be a reason why the customer satisfaction is so high.

Dell Precision M4400. It's a mobile workstation so the components will be more suitable for what you plan to do. Check the Dell outlet for good deals.
