Exactly what sort of evidence do Atheists want?

As far as I can see, the main argument that Atheists have is that there is no proof of a higher-being. However, when they say, "Show me proof?" I often wonder exactly what they are looking for; maybe a photograph of God, or a short film perhaps.

Are they looking for someone to come right out and say, "I have seen God with my very own eyes"; which of course they would simply dismiss as rubbish, as most people would.

Just curious.

Update:

Most of things that you have suggested happened in the Bible, i.e. Appearing to the us as Jesus, real miracles.

My point is is that the only evidence a Christian has is the Bible their own personal experiences, and Atheists know this, so why keep asking?

Update 2:

If the events of the Bible happened now and were written down, Atheists in the future would simply dismiss them as false. The people who witnessed these events and wrote them down in the form of Bible were certain that there was a God.

Anything would do, seriously, any one thing. What would Allah have to do to prove to a Christian that Islam is the true faith?

"If the events of the Bible happened now and were written down, Atheists in the future would simply dismiss them as false. The people who witnessed these events and wrote them down in the form of Bible were certain that there was a God"

    that is a terrible excuse

you cant ask us what evidence we want and then say but if we had it inteh future peopel woudlnt beleive it

thats hardly OUR fault and it nothing to do with this, the question or our answers

whether they do or do not accept it in the future has no bearing on whether yoi have any evdience or you dont

One of the problems is in fact the bible. Much of it garbled versions of historic events reinterpreted for political reasons. Much of it written by priests who had no knowledge of the solar system or the universe. A lot of contradictions. In essence a very unreliable book to base a way or life or a religion on. Apart from that there are things that happen that are clearly unfair and bad which, if there was some sort of god watching us, he could easily prevent. Take for example the 1939-1945 war. Hitler was without doubt a main cause of that but in the context of that war he made decisions which were not only bad for his country but caused masses of unnecessary suffering and he was a practising Roman Catholic so if there was a god he could have altered the man's thinking and prevented that

Something like a sample of Jesus' blood showing that there was no male human parent (probably impossible, but that sort of thing), or a double blind test showing a large improvement in the health of ill patients caused by prayer.

A holy book prophesising events accurately, or having knowledge that wasn't around at their time of writing.

Eye witness accounts are the least reliable evidence so I would not accept them.

Other things, such as the discovery of a soul that outlives the body would also make me more open to the idea, however wouldn't convince me straight away.

It's hardly difficult to differentiate between what is regarded as tangible/verifiable evidence and that which is nothing more than hearsay with no more foundation than the believer believes it.

At the present time all the theists 'evidence' falls firmly in the latter category, give us something tangible, observable, testable, measurable etc.....that is true evidence, none of this mantra that God exists because the bible says so etc.

It's hardly rocket science to decide what constitutes evidence and what doesn't.

If all of the prophets, from any country, at any time in history had all come up with EXACTLY the same set of writings all at the same time. That would go a long way to convincing me. Second, all of the writings were incisive and crystal clear with no ambiguity at all.

It shouldn't be too difficult for an omnipotent God to instruct a prophet/scholar to write exactly as dictated.

Here's what I would like: At the exact same time, everywhere in the world, all communications devices (television, radio, CB radio, Internet, and every other kind) suddenly go silent. After a few minutes, a voice is heard coming from those devices and the voice also appears to be in the air, speaking in each individual's language that says: "I am God. Hello! Now, do you believe in me?"

Any evidence of a god's existence would suffice. One coming down to the population of the world for a weekly roundtable discussion, a group of aliens with the same religion as us or capable of interbreeding, maybe an animal that actually looks designed, anything to indicate that existence isn't natural.

My criticism isn't that there is not any information it is that the information that christians web page is often shown to be incorrect. a million,000 years in the past a thunderstorm became information of a God. nicely it is in simple terms the blending of a heat modern of air with a chilly modern of air so as that should not be God. 3 hundred years in the past they thought that each and every species in the international became precisely the comparable as God had made them. even although we now know that species have replaced dramatically even in the previous few centuries. they have mentioned that the reason of the fossils in rock strata all over the area is Noah's flood yet particularly they're (for the main section) from guy or woman activities of fossilization. Even eclipses the place as quickly as concept to be an illustration from God yet that became defined additionally. temporarily, each time a Christian says "God exists because of the fact..." it gets defined via technology!

Because God is a man made concept. There is no evidence of God's existence, therefore the only place God could have originated from is the human mind.

a picture would do. More than one Reference for his existence. I have more references for the existence of Elves. A carbon dated bone of jesus a burial site. Build a time machine and take me there and show me jesus. A voice from the sky a real miracle. turn water into wine? make it rain frogs. I mean something beside saying the bible. Beside the bible you really do not have much.
