I have ulcerative colitis, and have been on high doses of?

prednisone. This drug causes a thinning of the skin, and whenever I bump myself, even slightly, I get these "red/purple" bruises (on my arms). I know this is normal with high doses of prednisone, but I want to know if there is any way to "speed up" the disappearance of these

marks. They seem to last at least a week and sometimes two. I'm embarrassed! Thanks.

I feel for you. I have lupus and am often on high doses of Prednisone. I bruise so easily that when I was in high school (I'm in my late 20s now), I was actually pulled into my guidance counselor's office and asked if things were okay at home! Prednisone is one of those drugs that I love to hate - it does really help the illness, but the side effects are truly atrocious. As for the bruising, I know it sounds really dumb, but I try to be very careful. It sounds easy to say, but I'm a clumsy girl. Once I realized that I was getting bruised a lot by my furniture, my husband and I rearranged a few things so that I had a bit more space. Also, I'm not sure quite how well this works but I do feel that it helps speed up the bruising a bit, I rub a bit of Arnica gel onto the bruise. My massage therapist got me into this when she saw how bruised up I am (and again, another questioning about whether or not things are okay at home!) As soon as I realize that a bruise is starting, I rub it on. I try to apply it at least twice a day - I apply in the morning and in the evening before bed. I get it through my massage therapist because it's cheap but I've also seen it at health food stores and vitamin shops. I also ice bruises that look really bad. I've also learned to love longer sleeved shirts - not necessarily long sleeved but 3/4 sleeved or 1/2 sleeved.

way back when , when my wife was going thru this, she was having the same thing....she too was embarrassed but she just wore long sleeve shirts to cover up. this poor woman has been thru it all let me tell you. i wish i could tell you something better, but bumps and bruises take time and she never found anything to help. another thing she had problems with was the weight with that drug, so watch your carbos and being a woman she also was on the water pills to get rid of that weight. i truly feel for you, i've watched her be sick for days with me not being able to do anything except try to get her to eat...
