What is the name of the meat-pastry that can be found in Port Elizabeth, South Africa?
A friend who spent some time travelling in South Africa claimed that there are really good meat-filled pastry things in Port Elizabeth. I am going to South Africa in August, and he has told me to look out for these treats.
From his description, they sound like some sort of meat pie. He had no clue what they were called, didn't even know if they were a South African dish...but he claims the best ones are in Port Elizabeth and that are the most delicious things he has ever eaten.
My curiosity is piqued -- does anyone know what he is talking about? Should I actually be looking out for this magical pie while I'm over there?

Well I'm from PE, but I can't really say that there is a special 'PE' pie. The best pies (IMO) are at a place called Beavers, it's about 80 minutes outside of PE. Between PE and East London.

Visit the king of pies (the King Pie franchise) on you travels and sample their delicious variety of meat pastries. The also have the elusive oriental delight called a samoosa.
On a serious note though, in South Africa we simply call meat pastries a pie, and they are widely available at most stores. I don't think PE has any special pies the rest of South Africa doesn't. Pies are enjoyed by many South Africans as a quick and economic snack, usualy around lunch.

Dirk is correct. There isn't a special PE type of pie. The same pies are available all over SA. Your friend needs to give you a lot more detail if there really is a special pie shop in PE who's product stands out above the thousands of others in the country.

Hmmm... a quest for a mystical, magical meat pie. Sounds like a wonderful excuse for a road trip.

Were they fried? He could be talking about half moons (turnovers), sausage rolls or maybe samoosas. I don't know though, I'm not from PE.
